Cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or childhood and have a permanent effect on body movements and muscle coordination. Symptoms include voluntary movements (ataxia) and a lack of muscle coordination; Stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasm); Walking king by pulling one leg or foot; Toe walking, crouched move, or ‘scissored’ gait; And muscle tone that is too tight or too floppy. Cerebral palsy usually occurs in the first months or years of life due to brain damage, brain infections such as bacterial meningitis or viral encephalitis, or head injury.
Ayurvedic treatment of cerebral palsy focuses on treating the presented symptoms and trying to counteract brain damage. A group of herbal medicines called ‘Medhya’ is very useful for improving the functioning of the brain and can also help in damaging the brain cells. These drugs include: Brahmi (bekopa monniari), mandukaparni (sentela asiatica), sankhapuspi (konavolavulasa plyunikyulasa), jyotishmati (selestrasa penikikyulatasa), kusmanda (benisasa hispida), u stukuguscaiscayeghresiya (lavenduglaseacresa)), asparagus (Asparagus resamosasa), heart leaves (Tinospora Cordifolia), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Asbestos-ash and Suvarna-ash. Some of these medications are also useful for preventing or reducing seizures.
Drugs that work on the ‘marrow’ tissue are useful in this condition and include Guduchi, Amalaki (Emblica offic Ficinalis), Musta (Cyprus rotandus), Punch-Tikta-Ghruta, Punch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Brahmi- Ghruta and Punch-Gavya-Ghruta. In addition, other drugs are used that improve nerve conduction and muscular coordination. These drugs include Kaishore-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Vatagjankush-Ras, Mahavat-Vidhvans-Ras, Tapyadi-Loh-Ras and Vish-Tinduk-Vati.
It is very useful to massage the whole body with ated herbal oils like Maha-Narayan oil, Maha-mash-oil and Maha-Sindhav oil. Special Panchkarma procedures like Shiro-Basti, Shiro-Dhara as well as long term courses of Basti (ated Shadhiya Enema) are also very useful in this situation.
Although cerebral palsy is not completely cured, Ayurvedic treatments can definitely help reduce disability and greatly improve the performance of the affected person.
