The hypothalamus in your brain, the pituitary gland below your brain, and the adrenal glands at the top of your kidneys make up what is known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (or HPA axis). Your HPA axis is the most important part of your endocrine system, and directly or indirectly controls hormonal activities in your body.
When you are under stress, your hypothalamus secretes corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), putting your body in a state of alertness when presenting itself with a physical or emotional threat. CRH travels to your pituitary gland where it stimulates the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) entering your bloodstream. When ACTH reaches your adrenal glands, it stimulates the release of your body’s main stress-fighting hormone cortisol.
An increase in cortisol as a result of a stressful situation leads to a cascade of reactions in your body that can help you to respond quickly to any threat. We call this the “fight or flight” response.
In general, cortisol is high during periods of stress and low when resting. Under normal circumstances the response loop allows your body to shut down these defenses when the threat passes, allowing your body to focus once again on healing and growth.
In some cases, if the threat is prolonged or prolonged, the flood system never stops exactly. The result is that cortisol levels often rise or remain low. In more extreme cases adrenal tension is referred to as adrenal exudation (also known as “nervous breakdown”).
Adrenal stress will most definitely disrupt your HPA axis, which is the key to your “life force”. Disruption of the HPA axis is at the center of most health problems, syndromes, diseases and old age. When the HPA axis is not functioning properly, a variety of neurological symptoms develop, such as anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, stress intolerance, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. In addition, the HPA axis is also involved in burnout and irritable bowel syndrome.
